Portsmouth's Michael McKinson put himself in-line for a world title shot when he upset the much-fancied Chris Kongo with a unanimous 10 round points win on the Whyte vs Povetkin 2 undercard at the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar. The win also included Kongo's hard-won WBO Global Welterweight Title that he took from Luther Clay in his previous outing.
A fast start from 26-year-old McKinson seemed to be the undoing for Kongo after he was dropped in the first round, after which the Bermondsey stylist reverted to a safety-first approach until the middle rounds.
In an unexciting 10 rounds, McKinson convinced the judges that he had done enough to deserve the decision.
Scores: Ian John Lewis 97-93 | Victor Loughlin 96-94 | Mark Lyson 95-94.
