Kid Gavilan, known as 'The Cuban Hawk', made his fourth defence as World Welterweight Champion against Detroit's unbeaten contender Chuck Davey at Chicago Stadium.

Gavilan had won the title from Johnny Bratton on the 18th May 1951 and made defences against Billy Graham, Bobby Dykes, and Gil Turner.

The 26-year-old Davey, a southpaw tried to use his boxing ability to keep the rugged Gavilan at distance but after he was floored in the 1st round he knew he couldn't get involved at shorter range.

Gavilan switched stance at times to confuse his challenger and by the 9th round, Davey no longer had the strength to take the champion's more powerful punches, going down three times before the bell sounded to end the round.

In the Interval, Davey's handler's decided that there was no point in sending their man out to take further punishment, thus handing the victory to Gavilan.
